Who is my advisor?
At Shenandoah you have a faculty advisor based upon your major who will guide course selection, internships and other issues related to your major. Learners also have access to the Office of Academic Advising, Transitions and Progression (AATP) for additional support. The AATP focus is to help you achieve your academic goals, regardless of your major.

I want to take a course at my local community college; what’s the process for transferring that course to Shenandoah?
Prior to taking a course at a community college, you’ll want to get the course approved by filling out the Permission to Study Elsewhere Form. You’ll receive an email from advising@su.edu if you are approved to take the course, and what it will transfer in as. If you’ve completed the course already, please have the other institution send your official transcript to us, either electronically to advising@su.edu or by mail to the following address: Shenandoah University, Attention Lydia Maynard, 1460 University Drive, Winchester, VA 22601
I am a transfer student; do I have to take FYS?
As a transfer student, you will take an additional three-credit course from the Navigating Differences sphere instead of the traditional FYS. If you have earned an associate’s degree (not Associate of Applied Sciences) prior to transferring, your general education requirements are waived and you won’t have to take this either!
What’s the difference between withdrawing and dropping a course?
Dropping a course does not count as an attempt on your academic record, where a withdrawal shows up on your transcript as an attempt, with a grade as a “W.”
How does grade replacement work?
A student can retake a course a maximum of two times for the possibility of earning a higher grade. However, each program and course has different policies and procedures on how retaking courses can work, so it’s important to discuss with your advisor the benefits of retaking a course. Please refer to the Academic Catalog for more detailed information.

Student Support Services
Student Support Services is committed to enhancing student learning, supporting academic success, and helping students become lifelong learners. Student Support Services implements and coordinates student peer tutoring programs, study skills development courses and workshops, services for students with disabilities, and academic counseling. Services are free to all students enrolled in the university.
Shenandoah University Writing Center
The mission of the Writing Center is one-to-one instruction in writing for all Shenandoah students. The conferences between students and the Writing Center staff, either face-to-face or online, work to enable students to learn productive habits in pre-writing, drafting, revising, and editing.
