Shenandoah Immersive Technology & Business Students Jointly Travel To South Africa

GEL Trip Provides Opportunity To Work With South African University and Develop New Ideas

Shenandoah University immersive technology and entrepreneurship/business students melded their disciplines in a unique way, traveling to Cape Town, South Africa, in April for a Global Experiential Learning class, through which they worked in partnership with Cape Peninsula University of Technology’s Dr. Michael Twum-Darko (project leader), students and faculty.

The Cape Peninsula University of Technology is at the heart of technology education and innovation in Africa. An internationally acclaimed institution, it is the only university of technology in the Western Cape and is the largest university in the region, with an enrolment of more than 30,000 students.

As part of the trip led by Shenandoah Associate Professor of Virtual & Augmented Reality Mohammad Obeid, Ph.D., and Adjunct Lecturer and Director of Entrepreneurship Yolanda Shields, DRP, Shenandoah’s virtual reality design students worked with their CPUT counterparts in developing real-world scenarios within virtual reality for training and education. The entrepreneurship team conducted lecture sessions that then turned those concepts into business startup ideas. The students prepared and presented workshops on their subject areas as well.

“The Shenandoah University students, who are all seniors, represented SU very well and it was evident that they are well prepared to enter the workforce,” said Dr. Shields.

Shenandoah’s team looks forward to continued collaboration with CPUT, providing students with further opportunities to make great impacts in the areas of entrepreneurship and immersive technology.
